Have you ever watched a fencing match and been in awe of the skill, speed, and precision of the fencers?

I first tried fencing when I was seven and watching older and more experienced athletes made me eager to learn and become like them. I wanted to compete right away but there was a long way before my first tourney.

For someone who never fenced before and would like to give fencing a try, I wanted to offer some tips to get started :

  1. Find a fencing club where you feel comfortable - you will be spending a lot of your time there if you are serious about becoming a competitive fencer.

  2. Meet the coaches: Finding an experienced fencing coach can make all the difference in your fencing journey. Look for instructors with a solid track record of success who is invested in helping you develop and grow as an athlete.

  3. Master the basics: Before you can fence in competitions, you need to learn the basics. Focus on developing proper footwork, stance, and blade work to build a strong foundation for your fencing skills.

  4. Practice regularly: Like any sport, fencing requires regular practice to improve. Set aside time each week to practice your fencing skills and drills to see progress and improvement.

  5. Watch fencing videos: Watching fencing videos can be a great way to learn new techniques, strategies, and tactics. Pay attention to the footwork, blade work, and overall tactics of the fencers in the videos to improve your own skills.

  6. Stay focused and determined: Fencing is a mentally and physically demanding sport that requires focus and determination. Stay committed to your training, push through challenges, and never give up on your goals.

Fencing is an amazing sport, give it a try and I will see you on the strips!
